Fly Fishing

Since its creation in 1998, the main lake here at Rathbeggan has established itself as one of the top Stillwater fly venues in the country. With depths of up to 12ft, many bottom features and a naturalised shoreline, it offers top quality sport for fly fishers of all skill levels. Regularly stocked with hand selected Rainbow trout from 2lbs upwards, the sport is superb and the chance of a big one is always there!
We are happy to advise on fly choice and leader setup. Just ask at the Lodge.
Apart from July and August each year, when we temporarily allow bait fishing, this lake is fly fishing only.Basic Casting Instruction is available and lessons can be booked at the lodge.

TIPS & TACTICS
Make sure your leader is at least the length of the rod.
Clear or green leader material gives the best results.
Sink the last foot of your leader. Drawing it through a pinch of lakeshore mud is an excellent sinkant.
Vary the speed of your retrieve.
Identify what insects are around and match their size.
Fish clever, stand a little bit back from the bank or crouch down so as to reduce your shadow.
